Step 1.
Align the left edge of the ruler, model ½, with the left edge of the distance to be divided.

Step 2.
Slide the right pointer to the right side of the distance to be divided.  The left pointer will automatically be at the center with the model ½; or at 1/3 the distance with the model 1/3.
